I got a requirement to create a new website for a scuba dive shop in Thailand. He needed it urgently as the Similan diving season was coming. How can I create a website within a couple of weeks? My background was an application developer who mostly programmed in C++ and knew only basic web programming. My experience tell me that creating a new web from scratch is not a choice as it would take me more than one month to get things work. Then, instant web template came up to my mind. I had researched for awhile and there were plenty of them on the internet. I did try many instant web services but nothing outstanding like Google Site. If you are able to create a word document, you also are able to create a website using Google Site. I took about 2 weeks to publish this website www.FlyingFishDiving.com. I’ll show you easy steps to make your own website in a few minutes.
- Go to http://sites.google.com and log in Google account. (if you don’t have one, you have to register first)
- Click Create Site.
- Initialize your site setting
- Name your Site, for example, ABC Soccer Club
- Select your URL if you don’t like auto-gen one.
- Choose a theme. If you’ve already selected a template, I suggest you to leave the theme as the template default.
- Now you’ve got your own website and it’s time to edit the content and picture.
- Click on Edit Page and then you can type as you are editing a word document.
You can have URL accsociated with your own domain name as I did with www.FlyingFishDiving.com, instead of http:\\sites.google.com\site\.... However, you have to begin with Google Apps first. Google Apps is a set of Google products, e.g. Gmail, Google Doc, and Google Site, used in an organization. If you need a brand new domain name, Google Apps also help register domain name to Go Daddy. As usual, it cost about 10 US Dollars a year for a domain name.
I haven’t told you every detail but just tried to convince you that it’s easy to begin manipulating your own website. Google Site Help and Forum already provide the in-depth detail. To me, Google Site is the best choice to make a personal website, group or club website which you can control who can access. As well, it’s a potential candidate for a small business that doesn’t have complicated things such as database system. You also can put gadgets like picture slide, carlendar, input form and many more free cool gadget in the internet on your website.
